How to Date a Wah
Return to the Main Index. Sometimes there just isn’t enough information on electric instruments and amps to allow them to be properely dated. And many people ask me to try and determine the year of their old amplifier, or to help them with the year of their older off-brand electric guitar. Since I primarily collect amps by Fender, and guitars by Gibson, Fender, Martin, National, Epiphone, Gretsch and Rickenbacker, I really can’t help them with these other less popular brands.
Jensen Loudspeakers takes no responsibility for any errors that may appear. This list exists solely for the purpose of determining functional speaker replacements for the amplifiers listed. Jensen Loudspeakers cannot be held liable for any problems that arise from the use of speakers placed into any amplifier other than the normal warranty.
Introduced around , Jaguars were exclusively Italian-built – no Jaguar was ever made in the UK of course, here I’m overlooking the Heathkit model, which might have been “built” anywhere in the world. It was a much simpler design, but was capable of some very good sounds, including some that sounded reminiscent of the Continental itself. The Jaguar was built into the same case as the Continental, and could easily be mistaken for one from a distance, especially from behind.
Here’s a characterization of the Jaguar’s sound, as provided by Kirk Slinkard: The Jaguar has four global filters that all the notes go through, giving it a typical instrument resonance. The Continental has separate voice-shaping circuitry for each and every note of the M voice, giving it a much more even and elegant sound. Each note has its own resonance. The same might be said of Hammond drawbar organs, but very few other organs. And the Jaguar has the different footage combinations in each octave, so it has that unique “mega foldback”, where the Continental is smooth and even all across the keyboard.

Another key design feature of the ’60s Vox amps was the chrome stand, which lifted the amp off the floor and giving it much better projection in larger venues. Remember that 30 watts through two inch speakers was cutting edge at the time.
The ’65 foldout shows what appears to be the UK amps but with the names that were later associated with the the Thomas US built models. Would be interested to know just how many UK models Thomas brought over in One the other side are the Phantoms and Mark models ie Brian Jones and some of the model names that continued in Eko. I don’t know exactly when Eko Vox models started Shows the Continental organ, but no Super Continental yet.
Plus they had the plug in treble booster but no fuzz yet, etc. The first shipments of British made Vox amps, organs and guitars landed in the Thomas Organ warehouses in Sepulveda California in November, The high costs of shipping, import duties and delays in production at JMI became a constant source of irritation to the management of Thomas.
Benaron offered a significant one-time royalty to JMI in exchange for a license that would allow Thomas to manufacture Vox products in their own facilities in California.

The source-date code on a pot is a 6 or 7 digit code impressed into the casing of the potentiometer. For speakers this code can be 5, 6, 7 or 8 digits long, and it’s ink-stamped or paint-stamped on the “bell housing” of the speaker. In either case, the code works the same. The first 3 digits on a pot, or the first 2, 3 or 4 digits on a speaker are the source or manufacturer code.
The remaining 3 or 4 digits are the date code. In 3 digit dates code, the 1st digit is the last digit of the year. On 4 digits date codes, the 1st and 2nd digits are the last two digits of the year. In either case, the remaining 2 digits are the week of manufacture 01 to With this in mind, remember if the last two digits of the source-date code are greater than 52, you’re not looking at the source-date code!
Also it’s worth mentioning: On 3 digit date codes, you have to “guess” the decade of the pot or speaker. Usually this isn’t too difficult. Examples of Source-Date Codes. With all this information in mind, can you identify the following manufacturer and date of these source-date codes?

Dec 29, · i just bought a used vox ac30cc2. according to the previous owner, it’s from i had read on here in doing my research that the first incarnations of the cc’s had a problem with the rectifier tube, and that a common fix was to just keep the standby switch to on all the time.
It’s actually quite good. I can’t find ANY info on Voxton manufacturer, country of manufacture, price etc. If possible a CC to my email would be appreciated. I too have a Voxton guitar, just acoustic; It plays great and I have had it for over 20 years The Voxton, as near as I can figure, was made by the Thomas Organ company after they merged with Royston company.
I believe they were designed by an Italian guitar maker, but do not have the proof. I was told by seberal guitar shops it is probably Korean made. I fail to agree as of yet. Sent a photo of yours if you have the equipment to do so. They seem to be a solid made guitar. Let me know if you get this mail.
